What is generative engine optimization, and how is it different from SEO?

SEO is about ranking in a list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) is about becoming the direct answer at the top. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being cited by a language model that writes its own answer. Most of the work overlaps: the same technical base and the same need for clear, dated content. GEO rewards passages that can be lifted out on their own, and success often brings no click.

SEO is about ranking in a list of links. AEO, answer engine optimization, is about becoming the direct answer at the top. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about being cited by a language model that writes its own answer. Most of the work is the same. GEO rewards passages that stand on their own, and success often brings no click.

Part of the reason there are three acronyms is that each new acronym can be sold as a new service. There is a real difference underneath the marketing, though, and it decides what you should care about when you write a page.

What do the three terms mean?

The question it asks A win looks like
SEO (search engine optimization) How does my page get high in a list of links? A position and a click
AEO (answer engine optimization) How does my text become the direct answer at the top? An answer box with your name on it
GEO (generative engine optimization) How do I get cited by a model that writes its own answer? A mention in a generated paragraph

How much do SEO and GEO overlap?

A lot. What makes a page work in all three is the same:

  • The page can be fetched and read without JavaScript.
  • Headings are phrased as questions people actually ask.
  • The content is correct, specific and dated.
  • The page loads fast and works on a phone.

If you do that, you have done most of the work for all three. Google says the same thing in its guide to AI features: there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond the normal Search Essentials.

What are the real differences?

1. The passage is the unit, not the page

Classic SEO ranks documents. A generative engine picks paragraphs. A page can be excellent as a whole and still never be cited, because no single paragraph works when it is lifted out alone. Write each section so it makes sense without the section before it.

2. Success often brings no click

If you are cited in an AI answer, the reader may already have what they needed and not click through. You get the brand exposure but not the visit. The usual SEO numbers (clicks, click-through rate, position) do not capture that outcome.

In classic SEO a link is the currency. A generative model also weighs how often your business is mentioned in the right context, with or without a link. A mention in an industry article without a link does work here in a way it never did for link-based ranking.

4. There is no position to track

You can measure that you rank seventh for a keyword. You cannot measure that you rank seventh in ChatGPT, because the answer varies between users, phrasings and moments. The best you can do is ask the same questions regularly and note whether you are mentioned.

What you can check is that you let the right crawlers in. OpenAI and Perplexity both document the user agents that fetch pages when someone asks a question. If you block them, there is nothing of yours to cite.

Does any of this change for a business in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

The mechanics are the same in the UAE as anywhere else. Two practical points matter more here. Many UAE businesses have their prices only in a PDF, an image or a WhatsApp reply, and a model cannot quote a price it cannot read. Write prices in AED as plain text on the page. If you serve customers in Arabic as well as English, give each language its own URL. Google recommends separate URLs per language version rather than switching the language of one page with cookies or scripts.

What should a small business do?

Ignore the acronyms. They describe the same work from three angles. Answer the question early, write out numbers and names, keep the page fast and readable, and make sure it can be fetched. After that it does not matter what the service is called in the quote.

If someone quotes GEO as a separate line on top of SEO, ask them to describe what is done differently. If the answer is “we optimize for AI” with no mention of passages, crawl access or entity mentions, you are paying for a word.

On our own site, every guide starts with a short direct answer and our prices are written in AED as text, for the same reasons. Our SEO prices are on pricing.
