Do I need a website maintenance contract for my business in Dubai?
It depends on what the site is built with. A WordPress site with plugins is software in production and needs updates, backups and monitoring, whoever does them. A static site made of ready HTML files has no database or plugins to update and can run for years with almost no maintenance. Before you sign a maintenance contract, ask for a line-by-line list of what it includes and what was done in the last twelve months.
Whether you need a maintenance contract depends on the platform. A WordPress site with plugins is software in production and needs updates, backups and monitoring. A static site made of ready HTML files has nothing to update and can run for years with little attention. Before signing, ask for a line-by-line list of what the contract covers.
“Best web hosting in Dubai” lists do not help much here, because the options solve different problems. A host that is right for a WordPress site with five mailboxes is the wrong choice for a static site, and the other way round.
What does website maintenance actually include?
Four costs are unavoidable for any business website. Everything else is a choice.
- The domain. Paid every year to a registrar. For a
.aedomain the registry is .aeDA under the TDRA, and any applicant can register a second-level.aename under its eligibility policy. The price you pay is set by the registrar you buy through. - Hosting. A WordPress site needs a server with PHP and a database. A static site does not, and can sit on the free tier of a modern host such as Netlify or Cloudflare.
- Email on your own domain. Usually counted as part of “the website” although it is a separate service, and usually priced per mailbox.
- The security certificate (SSL/TLS). Free. Let’s Encrypt has issued free certificates since 2015 and every serious host has it built in. If you see a separate line for an SSL certificate, ask about it.
What sits on top of that is optional:
| Item | What it is | Do you need it? |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance contract with an agency | Updates, backups and troubleshooting for a fixed fee | Depends on the platform |
| Premium plugins and themes | Licences renewed every year | Only if the site is built on them |
| Site builder plan (Wix, Squarespace) | A plan you pay for as long as the site exists | Replaces hosting and tools |
| Separate backup service | Copies of the site with another provider | Often already included |
| Uptime monitoring | Alerts when the site goes down | Free options exist |
| Ongoing content | New pages, copy and posts | A marketing cost, not a maintenance cost |
Keep the last row separate. Writing new pages is marketing, not running a website. When both sit on one monthly invoice, you cannot judge whether either is good value.
Why does the platform decide most of the cost?
A site made of ready HTML files has nothing to update, no database to back up and very little to attack. A WordPress installation with many plugins needs core updates, plugin updates and someone to check that the contact form still works after each update. That work exists whoever does it.
That is why two sites that look identical can cost very different amounts per year to keep running. The difference is whether the platform needs looking after.
Which nine lines should you check in a hosting or maintenance contract?
| Line | Why it is worth reading |
|---|---|
| Renewal price | The introductory price applies to year one. Year two can be much higher. It is in the terms, not the advert. |
| Email: included or per mailbox? | Per-mailbox pricing grows with every hire. |
| Backup: how often, how far back, how to restore? | “We take backups” is not an answer. Ask how you restore one yourself. |
| PHP version | Is it a version that still gets security updates? If not, the rest does not matter. |
| SSL certificate | Should be included at no cost. A separate fee is a warning sign. |
| Support hours | Which days and which time zone? The UAE is four hours ahead of GMT, and the federal government has worked Monday to Friday since January 2022. A host whose support works European hours overlaps with your morning only partly. |
| Where are the servers? | Matters for response time and for where personal data is processed. |
| Traffic and storage limits | “Unlimited” never is. Find the real limit in the fair use terms. |
| Notice period and export | Can you take your files and database without asking permission? If not, choose something else. |
Which promises sound good and mean little?
“Unlimited traffic.” There is always a limit, usually under a heading such as “fair use”.
“99.9% uptime.” Sounds like a lot. It allows roughly nine hours of downtime a year, and the guarantee usually only gives you a credit on the next invoice.
“Free migration.” Nice, but moving a normal business website is a few hours of work either way. Do not let it outweigh the renewal price.
Does hosting make the site faster?
Less than hosts suggest. On the sites we troubleshoot, slowness almost always comes from the site itself: large uncropped images, too many plugins, scripts that block rendering. A good server makes a heavy site slightly less heavy. It does not make it fast. The exception is the cheapest oversold shared hosting, where server response time can become a real bottleneck. You notice it as an even delay on every page.
How do you ask what a maintenance contract has done?
A maintenance contract can be perfectly reasonable: someone updates WordPress, tests the forms, takes backups and fixes what breaks. But ask to see what is included, line by line. If the answer is just “hosting and support”, it may be ordinary hosting with a markup for support you never use.
The question that gives the clearest answer: How many times have you done something to my site in the last twelve months, and what?
What does it cost with us?
We build static sites, so there is very little to maintain. Hosting and running the site with us costs AED 219/month. If you host the site yourself, you pay us nothing per month. Small changes for customers without hosting cost AED 649/hour, and larger changes get a fixed-price quote before we start. All prices exclude VAT and are on pricing.
